Office of Institutional Equity and Diversity

Who We Are

Our office partners with academic and administrative units across the University to advance Brown's commitments to diversity and inclusion through programming, strategic support, accountability, training and resources.

OIED Guiding Principles

The Office of Institutional Equity and Diversity (OIED) serves as a critical leader, resource, and support in sponsoring programs and events related to diversity and inclusion at Brown University. OIED helps lead inclusion efforts across campus through:

  • Excellence: We are strategists and partners who work with colleagues across campus to advance inclusive excellence. We do this through a wide range of programs and by developing and monitoring policies and employment practices with a commitment to equal access and opportunity. OIED is a key strategist and advisor to offices across campus for those working to both recruit and retain diverse talent, whether students, faculty or staff.
  • Accountability: We are stewards who ensure accountability to Brown’s commitment to diversity and inclusion by monitoring campuswide progress of the University’s Diversity and Inclusion Action Plan (DIAP) and the Departmental DIAPs. We produce an Annual Report for the DIAP and support the activities of the Diversity and Inclusion Oversight Board and the President’s Advisory Council on Diversity.
  • Collaboration: We are collaborators who support academic and administrative units with their efforts to fulfill the commitments to diversity and inclusion; to recruit a diverse faculty and staff; and to develop initiatives and programming to advance diversity and inclusion goals.
  • Respect for All: We are committed to ensuring that all members of our community feel valued for their contributions and are given equal opportunities to thrive. A cornerstone of our mission focuses on promoting academic excellence by furthering our commitment to inclusion, civility, and respect for all university stakeholders.
