Addressing Bias

While Brown University is committed to sustaining a campus culture in which each individual's humanity and dignity are acknowledged and institutional resources are available, bias incidents can and do occur with varying levels of frequency and impact. The bias reporting system is one tool used for collecting information, identifying trends and themes as well as informing future campus climate initiatives.

If a student, staff, faculty or visitor/guest has been impacted by a bias incident, please report using the online form. Questions can be emailed to equity_compliance@brown.edu. If an emergency has occurred, please call 911.

This glossary includes terminology commonly used in reference to bias and bias incidents. It is not meant to be exhaustive. OIED recognizes that language is complex and the definitions of many of these terms will continue to evolve.
